About SpaceX
Founded in 2002, SpaceX has become one of the biggest names in space travel in recent years. SpaceX was founded by Elon Musk, who has also become known for his role as the CEO of Tesla. In 2012, SpaceX became the first private company to launch a commercial spacecraft successfully and deliver cargo to and from the International Space Station. In 2020, SpaceX went one step further, becoming the first private company to bring humans to and from the International Space Station.
When you visit SpaceX, you’ll get a glimpse into the incredible future of spaceflight and can learn more about the great unknown. You’ll see how SpaceX has opened the doors to space travel for all and can get an up-close look at the science that has gone into their accomplishments. Currently, the SpaceX facility here in South Padre Island employs around 500 people working around the clock to prepare new spacecraft and prepare for upcoming launches.
Here on South Padre Island, the launch site for SpaceX is often referred to as Starbase. You can come here to check out where the launches happen or perhaps even witness one for yourself! This is the first private launch facility owned by SpaceX, and we’re fortunate to have it here on our shores! It’s probably not surprising to hear that SpaceX is one of the biggest tourist attractions in this area, so you won’t want to miss the chance to see it for yourself.
Recent and Upcoming Events
Currently, SpaceX is using the launch site on South Padre Island to test their Starship SN15. It has gone through several successful test flights so far, and the plans for this spacecraft are only getting bigger and more complex. Eventually, SpaceX hopes that this spacecraft will be able to carry both humans and equipment on long-term interplanetary flights and carry people to and from the moon and even to and from Mars!
Once Starship is fully operational, it is planned to become the primary orbital vehicle for SpaceX. Its debut is scheduled for some time in the early 2020s, and when it launches, it will have the biggest payload capacity of any orbital rocket ever constructed. When Starship does launch, we’ll get to learn more about what SpaceX has planned for the future. At this point, the sky is truly the limit!
